How to Mix Metals in Home Decor Without It Looking Off
“Match your metals” used to be a hard interior design rule. It isn’t anymore — mixing brass, chrome, black iron, and other finishes in the same room is now one of the easiest ways to make a space feel layered and collected rather than like it all came from one catalog page.
But there’s a difference between “mixed metals” and “mismatched metals.” Here’s how to land on the right side of that line.
Start With One Dominant Metal
Every room that mixes metals well still has one finish doing most of the work. Pick a primary metal — brass, for example — and let it appear on the majority of your larger fixtures and furniture pieces: door handles, a light fixture, table legs. This becomes the anchor the rest of the room reads off of.
Decide on Warm or Cool, Then Break the Rule Once
Metals generally fall into two temperature groups:
- Warm: brass, gold, bronze, copper
- Cool: chrome, nickel, stainless steel, black iron
A simple, safe approach is to pick one temperature to dominate a room. A more advanced (and often more interesting) approach is to intentionally mix warm and cool — say, a brass light fixture over a chrome-legged table — as long as one clearly leads and the other plays a supporting role.
Use Finish, Not Just Color, to Add Depth
Two metals in the same color family can still look different depending on their finish. A polished, glossy brass reads modern; a brushed or aged brass feels more traditional or vintage. Combining a polished finish with a matte one in the same room — even in the same metal — adds a layer of intentional contrast.
Keep Secondary Metals Small
Once your dominant metal is set, introduce a second (or third) metal through smaller items: a picture frame, a vase, drawer pulls, a mirror edge. These smaller accents let you experiment without the room feeling busy, and they’re easy to swap out later if your taste changes.
